I took my girlfriend home from school last night and on my way home I completely snow drifted out of her neighborhood because the snow was so thick and I had no traction, I saw a couple broken down snowplows, I was forced to run a few red lights blaring on my horn because if I had stopped I would’ve gotten stuck, and when I tried to get up my driveway this is what happened:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

My truck is still in that position this morning. Ive never driven in snow this bad before

If you have to run red lights, get the fuck off the road. Your truck is clearly not set up to make it through the snow. You should have parked it lest you run into someone.

I can’t drift but in some places I do use strategic handbrake turns just to make my car actually turn 90 degrees instead of plowing straight through by understeering.

Driving in snow is pretty fun, just not in conditions where it’s a total snowstorm where you can barely see in front of you.

Youve never driven in snow and ice have you. If there is ice underneath the snow, traction doesnt exist. It has nothing to do with how my truck is “set up”

I have driven on snow and ice before. If you don’t have the proper vehicle and tires, get off the road or slow down. Running red lights is beyond stupid and nobody would care what you say if you hit them. If you can’t stop for the light, you’re going too fast for your “set up”.

02/02/2016 at 13:07

Kinja'd!!!9

Eh, telling a Canadian that he hasn’t driven in snow/ice isn’t a good move, bro...

That said, with proper snow tires, it works a ton better. Same for running chains (which you should already have, being in Denver...) and/or studded tires for ice.

You know, a little common sense goes a long way. Part of that is ensuring that you have the proper tires/chains/ballast in the bed to ensure traction.

It’s not that bad here right now. Crappy yes, but definitely something you can make it to work through. The neighborhoods are the worst. They haven’t been plowed and probably won’t for at least a day. Denver is the worst city that sees snow regularly. The don’t plow for crap.

Kinja'd!!! WiscoProud > Denver Is Stuck In The 90s

Kinja'd!!!4

Since you already have sandbags in the back, I would rely on a lighter right foot. The grabbers and LSD should be more than enough to get you through that. Might as well get chains though. Couldn't hurt any. If you have a manual, or 2nd gear start, I would use that. Trying to drive in first in snow like that just spins your tires, 2nd gear is better.

Kinja'd!!!5

Hon, I’m saying this as gently as I can, but if you’re running multiple red lights, you need to slow down a LOT or get off the road entirely.

I could understand getting caught unawares too late and too close to an intersection and chancing a yellow/red light, but multiple lights? No. Just no. Not ok.

Speed limits are just suggestions in poor driving weather and conditions. Ideally, you should be way under them in order to mitigate circumstances like you’re describing. And no, I don’t have to had driven in snow and ice to understand that.

Sometimes, you just have to tighten the loose nut behind the steering wheel.

Running one light, due to weather? Not cool, but it happens. It’s also your big flashing wake up call that the roads are bad and driving habits need to be adjusted accordingly. Going through multiple lights is a good sign that you need to get off the roads.

Telling a northern ontarian that like Peter is especially comical. I;ve driven in the snows and ices for over 10 years. I have only ever run one red light where I was going too fast and couldn’t stop. The reason was because I had forgotten (or wasn’t thinking) that I had just oil sprayed and there was oil all over my brakes. It rubs off fairly quick but I had forgotten and was going too fast. There was no snow.

Look it can happen. You see a lot more light violations in bad weather and yeah a bottom of the hill is the hardest, but if you’re in a standard as he is (and I am) you can use gearing to help slow. I lived in Eastern ontario for 10 years (last years avg temp in feb was 1F)...and I have never ran a light due to weather.
